Festival after Festival after Festival…

“Obviously, the highest type of efficiency is that which can utilize existing material to the best advantage.”

-Jawaharlal Nehru

Festival season is upon us. Which for Austin, is practically year round. You already know this, so quit your bitchin’ and figure out how to use it to your advantage. If not to expand your understanding of your world through music, advancements in technology and appreciation for others; then at least use it to advance your own socioeconomic status and pay your bills.

WARNING: This is not an attempt to help you indulge in a money laundering, Mafia-esque lifestyle.

I am simply trying to help you make the best of an inevitable situation.

Consider this. You are one of the many individuals descending on some poor unassuming city for one of the many festivals that occur in this country and beyond. On average, they last about 3 days and cost $1,000 – $1,500 dollars. As in money. I don’t know about you but, to me that seems absurd. It also seems like a great opportunity for the locals to make some extra money.

Obviously, Hotels are out to make a profit, so the price during peak seasons or events tend to be outrageous. In Austin alone, prices during festivals can range from $100 – $600 / night. This is basically the price to hold your suitcase because rarely is it the point of vacation to stay inside your hotel. Alternatively, you can rent from sites like Airbnb, HomeAway, Sublet, etc. at the same price (if not less) and for all the amenities of home, like a full kitchen, washer and dryer, etc. If you plan it right, you can plan meals at your home away from home, all the while supporting the individual and not the corporation. That is if you are travelling on a tight budget.

This is where you say, “Where do I sign up?”

I don’t think I need to describe to you the benefits in full detail.

Y’all are smart.

ACL is the next “Major” festival in Austin and it has been expanded to two weekends. Say you charge $200 / night for 6 nights. Assuming the renter is smart and is travelling in a pack. That’s rent for that month and the satisfaction of knowing you are helping others afford and enjoy their trip, guilt free. Find alternate living situations with friends and family. Just make it work, its such a small inconvenience for such an advancement in your bank account and ultimately, your personal freedom.
